This is by far, one of the most pressing challenges of living alone!
Having to worry about what you’re going to eat all the time is not very efficient! Especially if you’re a full-time student or employee (or worst, both!); which’s why I’m adding all you need to know about food management and prep in one place.
For me, ordering/shopping for groceries is a once-in-a-week thing. I order/shop for: vegetables, fruits, chicken/meat/fish, and legumes and peas (both canned and frozen). Also the cooking oil, rice/noodles, condiments, and let’s not forget the hot (or/and sweet chili) sauces!
I enjoy the cooking part, but I don’t assume that you do, so I’m writing you a special section in later blogs, don’t worry…
Before I start this delicate process, I write down all the meals that I can prepare with the items I’m ordering and how long would they last. I usually match items that can be used in multiple meals. I assume you’re trying to save on the food part, so here goes an example of my food shopping list and the meals I can prep. And how long they would last!
There is no one-size-fits-all in the food division; I’m still figuring this out myself!
I have tried meal prep for 5 days in Tupperware and all – and yes, you can put the meals in the fridge and they’ll still be fresh when you microwave them – but I didn’t really like it!
If you’re into that though, you can get your Tupperware from here (the best place I’ve found with decent prices and high quality): Al-Mokhtar stores
My preference with food is just cooking the meal in a pot, and heating a small part in a separate pot each day (for 2-3 days)!
For me, food management is directly proportional to time management! The more time I have to spend thinking about food, the less I can spend thinking about something useful!
Having a system in place reduces unnecessary time and money waste.
For example, you can schedule Thursdays to order groceries, Fridays to order in, and Saturdays (and Mondays) to cook and meal prep.
A small gift for you:
