Living alone: How to transform your hobby/skill into money?

Keyword searches for “career”, “salary”, “résumé”, and “skill” are on the rise in Jordan. The reason is that people are constantly looking to better their lives & increase their income in one way or another.

Living alone (or with housemates) requires a steady flow of income; as the expenses are a bit high (Read here for Expenses: Reality Check in Amman, Jordan).

Learning how to transform your hobbies/skills into money is an art in itself! This art wasn’t taught to us while growing up, and as a result, when we leave the nest, we might find it pretty hard to create an income for ourselves! Of course, a “full-time job” is one way to go, but some people are not satisfied with the limited salary and want to expand their horizons.

There are multiple ways to do that: getting another part-time job on the side as a lecturer/driver/delivery…etc. or start your own business with ZERO cost.

How to transform your hobby/skill into a CA$H GENERATOR?

  1. On a piece of paper, write a number of your hobbies and skills you’re really good at (e.g.: drawing, writing, cooking, voice-over, editing videos….etc.). You’ll be transforming these skills/hobbies into services/products.
  2. Decide who your customer is. Whom are you targeting with each service/product?
  3. Validate by making sure that your target customers are in need of your service/product. Do that by surveys (online & face-to-face) and social listening on social media.
  4. Decide how you’re going to sell your service/product and for how much money (selling price and cost to make the product/service)
  5. Validate by making sure that your target customers are willing to pay the price you’re asking for.
  6. Study the market. Is there a huge competition? Is the market saturated with this product/service? Are they all selling the same product/service? Or are you offering something special (with a competitive advantage)? How is your competition marketing its products/services online?
  7. Know where your target audience is at? (Which social media platforms) and where they’re in real life (students in schools or teachers or parents…etc.)
  8. Finally, create a brand identity (name, logo, colors) and launch your business online.

P.S.

Don’t compare yourself to any other business/freelancer. You’re on your own journey. Just do your research, validate your product/service, then step on the gas pedal and start selling!

Good luck!
