Flatmates

I really hope that you have been blessed by loving, caring, quiet (and minding-their-own-business type of flatmates/roommates.

Choosing the people you’re going to live with for the next 6 months (at least) is not easy; especially if you’re unlucky in this area like me!

Before choosing a flatmate/roommate, you need to know yourself first. This is all new to you. Living with total strangers.

And at first, you probably didn’t have the “flatmate goals” on your checklist! But now that you’ve tried living with various types of flatmates, you know it is a necessity!

Well, back to getting to know yourself. If you’re an extrovert, then perhaps living with others is optimal, but if you are an introvert (and value your personal space so much) the only solution is to live alone.

Your budget plays a major role, and financial freedom gives you more room to choose. If your budget is limited, that’s okay, you can rent a shared house and then move out when you’ve saved enough (It’s totally ok and normal).

Your personal goals at this moment in your life are absolutely vital in your flatmate choices! If you want to study, then you should consider “silent” flatmates. If you have a full-time job and looking to date, go out, and have fun, well, you should look for like-minded creatures.

"On a piece of paper, write down what is important to you, what you can and can’t tolerate, what you can compromise, and your current goals."

At this point, I believe you’re clear on what you want and need in your shared living situation, you can go ahead and “qualify” every shared house you’re considering.

Remember, it’s utterly necessary to be upfront and direct about yourself, your wants, and your needs; as this is a 2-way relationship, you both need to be able to co-exist with one another!

Happy flat-sharing!
