Expenses: Reality check!

Before you decide to live alone, make sure you have a steady income. A full-time job, a part-time, or a freelance with a semi-fixed income would work!

Living alone is obviously pricier than shared living. Here, you’ll have to bear all the costs yourself: maintenance, utility bills, guard and services….etc.

I’ll mention the expenses for your reference (approx. monthly values according to Jordan pricing):

  • Furnished housing (studio 200-350) JOD or an apartment 300-500 JOD)
  • Unfurnished housing (studio 150-200) JOD or an apartment 250-500 JOD)
  • Gas (in summer: every 2-3 months one gas jar for cooking), in winter (gas for cooking + gas for heating: 1 every 2-3 weeks)
  • In case the gas hob was electrical, discard the above, and add it to your electricity bill.
  • Electricity (Depending on the meter’s type, if the meter is residential, the value of the bill is in the range of 12-15 dinars, as for the commercial bill, double/triple that number)
  • Water (according to the meter, if the meter is residential, the value of the bill is around 15 JD every 3 months, if it’s commercial, it’s around 40-50 JD’s/3 months)
  • Drinking water (bottles/Gallons: a bottle every week): 3-4 dinars/month
  • Gym/month: 40-80 JOD
  • Transportation/fuel (depending if you’re using public transportation or the Applications).
  • Guard & Building expenses (if any): 10-15 dinars
  • Food: cook your own food (buy everything you need at the beginning of each month) and only go to the mall or supermarket for urgent stuff. You can also buy takeaway once a week or so (depending on your budget).

But why do women choose to live alone if it’s this pricy? Check out this article here
