Finding a HOME as a divorced lady in Jordan?

Divorce is an emotional rollercoaster on its own! Adding “housing” to the list of things a woman needs to worry about doesn’t make it any easier!

Although divorce numbers are increasing tremendously, there is still a stigma around “divorced women & single moms” and their “living situation”!

Many tend to move back to their parent’s houses after divorce; however, it’s not always possible!

Here are a few times when moving back to live with your parents after divorce is not an option (or might be only for a really short term):

  1. Parents are not alive (& there is no family house or it’s already occupied)
  2. Shaming from family and/or the neighborhood community
  3. The parents’ condition is you move in without the kids (if you have any)
  4. Your parents might not be financially sound to afford a new member(s).
  5. You want to raise your kids (if you have any) without the influence of your parents, or them medaling in your business.
  6. You want to heal alone; without people around you making you feel like you’re broken & giving you pitty looks
  7. When you’re constantly reminded that you need to go out there and find yourself a husband!
  8. You are too independent to go back to the “family household”.

**Of course, some parents are an absolute treat and all they want is just to give care & love to their grandbabies.

What are the challenges that might face you when looking for a place to live in (alone or with your kids) as a divorced woman?

  • Judgment from the community. When/If you tell them you’re divorced, they’ll start asking questions.
  • Landlords don’t usually prefer to rent out to divorced women; as they’re concerned if the woman was able to pay the rent on time.
  • The divorced woman sometimes tends to keep wearing a ring and pretend she’s still married to avoid judgment.
  • She spends so much time searching for an affordable house in a safe manner. There are no specialized platforms to afford that!
  • She can’t afford to live alone after the divorce; especially with the very low alimony. She has to find a flatmate to live with; which is extremely hard with no platform to connect her with a compatible match (especially with her being emotionally drained from the previous relationship)

What are we doing to actually solve this issue?

This blog is created to spread awareness, not only for women but also for parents, and the community as a whole!

SAKAN is not stopping at that though, have launched a platform that connects women from all backgrounds (and social status) to flatmates & homeowners in a safe, affordable, and timely manner.
